Well it's been a rough few weeks!
First, the power supply to my computer with EVERYTHING on it died. Not good. Couldn't rush out to get a new computer or get it fixed due to the fact that my daughters and I were testing last weekend for our next belt ranks in Tae Kwan Do. Good new there tho', we all passed! I got my brand spankin' new Red Belt, Hope got her Blue Belt and Sydney got her Green Belt with stripe! I am so glad that hurdle has been jumped. Lotta pressure there!
So the test is over, computer is still dead. Last Sunday went out and replaced the whole thing....no XP anymore. Only VISTA. Freedom of choice gone. I had read that you can buy a Dell and although it comes with Vista, based on the version of Vista software you buy, you can DOWNGRADE to XP and Dell will install it ....but that would mean ordering one and I needed a computer immediately. What's a girl to do? Had to have my computer...withdrawal symptoms were fast approaching. So I bought the Vista (have I mentioned that Vista and I are not quite friends yet?)
Now it was time to load the programs I used that may or may now work right (as I got a 64 bit vs a 32 bit computer) and manually select all the XP programs that I had backed up online and restore them to their appropriate Vista areas (so much for hitting the "Restore My Computer" button. BUT! The files were there!!!!! Every single one of them from my XP...just waiting for me!
STOP!
I highly recommend, if you don't already do this, PLEASE back up your files with a reputable online backup company. I use Carbonite and they are awesome! For $54.94 (that's the 1-year subscription price...there are 2 and 3 year ones that are discounted), this little gem of a program backs up everything in your Documents and Settings folder (called Users in Windows Vista), including documents, photos, email and data files from applications, such as Quicken, Money, etc. Once a subscription is purchased, music is also added to the list. The default backup does not include programs, system files, temporary files, videos, or individual files greater than 4GB. You can, however, manually add any of these to your Carbonite backup (and MAC users can now subscribe now as well)
Then, Carbonite uses a combination of encryption techniques, similar to those used by banks, to safeguard your data. Files are encrypted twice before they leave your computer and remain encrypted on our servers, making it virtually impossible for anyone to access your files without your secret password. Users are also given the option to manage their own encryption key.
Best of all...there are no limits on backup storage capacity. Carbonite will back up all the supported files on your internal hard drive whether you have 1GB, 10GB or more.
The cool thing about Carbonite is that it's always running....when you create and save a new file, image, etc, it flags it to be added to the nexk back up, so new stuff is always added throughout the day. Carbonite regularly searches your computer for new stuff! If you change file that has already been backed up, it will be flagged to back up and overwrite the original copy.
This program saved my butt big time! It had everything I needed (even my EC custom filter settings), all my Incredimail contacts, messages and data...all of my scrap kits....EVERYTHING! At least 70 gigabytes of information...all readily accessible to restore! Of course where all the XP files went was a challenge so I have to thank the IM people, the Carbonite people and some great online friends for helping me with that task!
But man, thank God for Carbonite! (I'm sure there are other programs and I am no way affiliated with them, but if you don't already have something like this...it's work every penny!!!!)
So that's where I've been! After a week being down, I'm all set up again! I'm still not quite used to Vista....but I have my stuff! (YAY) Now I can see if it all works...LOL. Actually so far so good!
Be on the look out for more kits soon (perhaps I'll name the next one "Vista")....I'll also try and get a few tuts done as well.
Hugs to all,
Jill
